Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Secure Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the prestigious cup on fourteen separate occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France winners after the French winger found the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side struck two times late to take a surprise advantage. First, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking twist of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to send the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
